How do I apply for a Malaysian passport? What are the requirements?

You must be a Malaysian citizen to be eligible for a Malaysian passport.

Apply for an adult passport if you're aged 18 or over. If you are under age 18, apply for a child passport.

Where to apply

If you're in Malaysia:

Online passport application and renewal will be introduced in September 2016.

If you're outside Malaysia:
  • Apply for your Malaysian passport at any Malaysian Representative Office abroad.

Applying for your first adult passport

You must appear in person. You'll be attended by a queue number system.

Bring along original documents. Photocopies are not accepted.

The use of word 'anak lelaki (AL)' and 'anak perempuan (AP)' for Indian and non-Muslim citizens on the main page of the passport has been repealed but disclosed in the 'OBSERVATION' page.


How long it takes

Don't book travel until you have your passport - doing so is at your own risk.


If you're in Malaysia:
  • Passport application will be processed on the same day and you can collect your passport on the same day.

    Your application can be delayed if you don't follow instructions or that your identity card has defects.

If you're outside Malaysia:
  • Please refer to the Malaysian representative office for the current passport application processing times.

Malaysian passport unclaimed after three (3) months from the date specified in the payment receipt will be forfeited, including the paid application fee. You will be required to submit a fresh application and appropriate fees.
