What are the rules for passport photos?

If you're in Malaysia

  1. If you apply at at Immigration offices:

    No photo is required.

    Malaysian passport facial image is taken at the desk counter using facial live capture (FLC) system.

  2. If you apply online:

    Soft copy of your photo is required.

If you're outside Malaysia

  1. If you apply at Malaysian representative offices abroad in Singapore, New York, London, Hong Kong, Melbourne and Jakarta:

    No photo is required.

    Malaysian passport facial image is taken at the desk counter using facial live capture (FLC) system.

  2. If you apply at other Malaysian representative offices abroad:

    Please refer to the Malaysian representative office for photo rules.

Photos of children

For children up to 4 years old, it is recommended that you provide own photographs as facial live capture system is not suitable for this task.

You need 2 identical photos for a passport application.

Children must be on their own in the photo and must not be holding toys or using dummies.

What your photo must show

You must get a new photo when you get a new passport, even if your appearance hasn't changed.

Your photo must be taken at a professional photo studio. Instant or Polaroid photo is not acceptable.

Your photo must:
  • be taken in full-face view directly facing the camera

  • not be trimmed or cut down from a larger photo to the size of a standard passport photo

  • be taken recently

In your photo, you must:
  • wear dark-coloured[2] clothing covering shoulders and chest

  • have neutral facial expression (no smiling)

  • have both eyes open and mouth closed

  • not wear a hat

  • not have any 'red eye'

  • not wear head covering (tudung) [1] (unless it's for religious purpose)

  • not wear spectacles or contact lenses

  • keep hair off your face

  • not have any shadows on your face or behind you

Size of your photo

Photographs must be taken with plain white or off-white background size 35mm x 50mm.



The size of image must be between 25mm - 30mm from the chin to crown of the head.

  1. ^ Your head covering (tudung) must be dark-coloured and not cast any shadow on your face.

  2. ^ If you wear light-coloured clothing, you'll be given a black jacket to wear.
