When selling your home, many times it's the little things you do that make the biggest impression on potential buyers. While you've probably already taken care of the bigger tasks like decluttering, here are five more simple tips you can do to make your home the best it can be for showings.
1. Beautify the outside
You don't have to spend a lot of time or money on making the outside of your home a little more inviting. You've probably already got some flower pots lying around. All you need to do is buy some flowers for them and then set them by the front door. If you have window boxes you haven't used in a while, this is the perfect time to put flowers in them. How is your lawn looking? If it needs a mowing, don't put it off. There is something about a freshly mowed lawn that makes everything look better. Also trim the hedges.
2. Wash the windows
Remember that while you might not get up close and personal with your windows anymore, people who are entering your home for the first time and considering making it their home will be close to these windows when they check out the view. It is understandable if you can't clean the outside of some of the windows, but the ones you have access to clean both sides of, not only the inside.
It is certainly true you'll be taking your dusty furniture with you when you move, but the impression it leaves on people coming into your home with their eyes wide open just isn't a good one. Take a few minutes each day to dust and it won't build up causing you to have to do a huge job at the last minute. The same goes for vacuuming and while you don't have to do it daily, every other day will keep things looking good.
4. Wash curtains
How long has it been since you've washed the curtains? For most of us the answer is years or possibly never. If you don't have the time, don't worry. Washing the curtains though, will shock you. You won't realize how dirty they were until you do. The benefit of doing this to show your home, clean curtains will let more light stream through. No matter the curtain color, they will look brighter after a washing.
5. Air it out
This tip is especially important for the kitchen area, but odors travel and though the easiest solution might be to spray air freshener, you don't want to give your home viewers a headache with a freshly air freshened house. Instead, allow your home to air out on a daily basis. Open the windows and let the fresh air in. When you are cooking, use the exhaust to remove smells. If you have a portable fan, use it in different rooms to circulate the air. And to create a homey smell when viewers stop by, have a pot of coffee on the go or (if you have time) pop cookies or muffins into the oven.
Often it is the little things that can make the greatest impression on your home. Things that when living in a home so long we normally forget, but other people will notice. Don't forget to take time for these small things as you get ready to show your home to potential buyers.
