Earth Hour started in 2007 in Sydney, Australia. In 2012, Earth Hour Global headquarters moved to Singapore and is currently registered as a charity under the Charity Act to guide and grow the worldwide movement each year.

The Earth Hour '60' logo represents the 60 minutes of Earth Hour a positive act for the planet. The 'plus' was introduced in 2011 for Earth Hour commitment beyond the hour.

Earth Hour is an initiative to encourage individuals, businesses and governments around the world to take accountability for their ecological footprint and engage in dialogue and resource exchange that provides real solutions to our environmental challenges.

Earth Hour is organized by WWF, the parent organization and volunteer organizations around the globe. Many major icons and neon signs are switched off for the hour and they are extremely noticeable in large business districts around the world.

Earth Hour aims to encourage an interconnected community around the world to share the opportunities and challenges of creating a sustainable world.

The event is held towards the end of March which allows for near coincidental sunset times in both northern and southern hemispheres, thus ensuring the greatest visual impact for a global 'light out' event.

Earth Hour is a brand legally trademarked worldwide and licensed for use by WWF delivering the Earth Hour movement.
