United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR)

United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) is commonly known as the UN Refugee Agency. It is a program of the United Nations created to protect and support refugees at the request of a government or the United Nations itself and assists in their voluntary repatriation, local integration or resettlement to a third country.

United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) is based in Geneva, Switzerland. It is a member of the United Nations Development Group.

UNHCR was established in December 1950 and is mandated to lead and co-ordinate international action in protecting and assisting refugees around the world. Its main purpose is to safeguard the rights and well-being of refugees.

UNHCR is funded almost entirely by voluntary contributions from governments and the European Union while other funding from inter-governmental organizations and private sector.

Works of the UNHCR are:

  • Education: Enable refugee children and young people to access education
  • Asylum and migration: Protect those involved in mixed migratory movements and at sea
  • Cash-based interventions: Provide refugees with cash and vouchers to fulfill their needs

  • Environment, disasters and climate change: Protect the environment that has a big impact on the work of UNHCR
  • Coordinating assistance: Coordinate a quick and effective response in emergencies
  • Health: Provide essential healthcare to all refugees
  • Solutions: Family reunification, local integration, resettlement and voluntary repatriation
  • Livelihoods: Safe value chains, wage employment, small and micro enterprises, graduation approach and private sector engagement
  • Shelter
