District Courts of Iceland

The Judicial Council established under Act No. 15/1998 which was entered into force on 1 July 1998, deals with matters pertaining to the District Courts.

The judges of the District Courts shall be 38 in number, appointed to their offices for an indefinite period of time by the Minister of Justice.

The main functions of the Judicial Council are to management of financial affairs of district courts; determine the number of judges and staff at each district court; collect information on the number of cases in the district courts, and the conclusions of cases.
