Federal Court of Justice, Germany

One of the Supreme Federal courts in Germany. The other four Supreme Federal courts are Federal Administrative Court, the Federal Finance Court, the Federal Labour Court and the Federal Social Court. In accordance with the EC Treaty, the Federal Court of Justice, as the court of last instance in matters of ordinary jurisdiction, will refer questions concerning the interpretation of Community law to the European Court of Justice (ECJ) for decision. With a few exceptions, the Federal Court of Justice acts as a court of appeal. Its principal task is to ensure uniformity of the law through clarification of fundamental points of law and development of the law.
