NAM Institute fot the Empowerment of Women (NIEW)

NAM Institute for the Empowerment of Women (NIEW) was established on July 1, 2006 by the Malaysian Government under the purview of Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development. It began as a proposal headed by the Government during the first NAM Ministerial Meeting held in May 2005 in Malaysia.

NAM Institute for the Empowerment of Women (NIEW) is the movement's international institute dedicated to women's development and empowerment.

It has the support of Ministers and Heads of Delegations from NAM Member Countries. Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) is an international organization of 120 states that are not formally aligned with or against any major bloc.

NAM Institute for the Empowerment of Women (NIEW) focuses on the aspects of training and capacity building for women of NAM Member Countries in critical areas namely politics and economy, education and ICT, health and violence against women.

NAM Institute for the Empowerment of Women (NIEW) collaborates with diplomatic community, international bodies, private sectors, academia and civil society to ensure empowerment of women and achievement of gender equality in NAM Member Countries.

In September 2007 , the NIEW Resource Centre (RC) was set up as a special library which houses more than 2500 volumes of printed and non-printed materials, international journals and monographs related to women and gender. The Resource Centre is not open to the public. They have to submit formal written requests.

The primary functions of NAM Institute for the Empowerment of Women (NIEW) are:
  • to conduct training courses and workshops in the areas of women and gender for the benefit of NAM Member Countries;

  • to organize luncheon, talks and lecture series related to gender and women to government agencies, public organizations and NAM Member Countries to promote gender awareness;

  • Conduct international seminars and programs on current and pressing issues relating to gender and women of NAM Member Countries;

  • Coordinate and carry our research studies on women and gender-related issues of priority to NAM Member Countries

  • Compile and publish articles and source of reference materials on women and gender-based issues.
