Kementerian Pembangunan Wanita, Keluarga dan Masyarakat (KPWKM), Malaysia

Also known as the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development.

Initially established on January 17, 2001 as the Ministry of Women's Affairs (Malay: Kementerian Hal Ehwal Wanita).

On February 15, 2001, the functions of the Ministry were widened and it was renamed the Ministry of Women and Family Development (Malay: Kementerian Pembangunan Wanita dan Keluarga (KPWK)). Consequently, the Department of Women Affairs (Malay: Jabatan Hal Ehwal Wanita (HAWA)) and the National Population & Family Development Board (Malay: Lembaga Penduduk dan Pembangunan Keluarga Negara (LPPKN)) were placed under the Ministry. HAWA was later restructured and renamed Department of Women Development (Malay: Jabatan Pembangunan Wanita (JPW)).

On March 27, 2004, the Ministry was renamed the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development (Malay: Kementerian Pembangunan Wanita, Keluarga dan Masyarakat (KPWKM)) when it took on the functions of the Ministry of National Unity and Social Development (Malay: Kementerian Perpaduan Negara dan Pembangunan Masyarakat) which was dissolved after the General Election in 2004.

Agencies under the purview of the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development are:
  1. Department of Women Development (Malay: Jabatan Pembangunan Wanita (JPW))

  2. Social Welfare Department of Malaysia (Malay: Jabatan Kebajikan Masyarakat Malaysia (JKMM))

  3. National Population & Family Development Board (Malay: Lembaga Penduduk dan Pembangunan Keluarga Negara (LPPKN))

  4. Social Institute of Malaysia (Malay: Institut Sosial Malaysia (ISM))

  5. National Welfare Foundation (Malay: Yayasan Kebajikan Negara (YKN))

  6. NAM Institute for the Empowerment of Women (NIEW) (Malay: Institut Pengupayaan Wanita bagi Anggota Pergerakan Negara-negara Berkecuali)


The main functions of the Ministry are:
  • to increase the participation and active role of women, families and communities as contributors and beneficiaries of development countries;

  • to preserve the rights of women, families and communities fairly and impartially without discrimination element;

  • to extend equal opportunities to women and society in the social, economic and political fields;

  • to strengthen the family institution; and

  • to ensure the delivery of support systems efficiently and effectively.
