An agency under the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development (KPWKM) (Malay: Kementerian Pembangunan Wanita, Keluarga dan Masyarakat (KPWKM)).

Initially established in June 1966 as the National Family Planning Board (NFPB) (Malay: Lembaga Perancang Keluarga Negara) under the Population and Family Development Act 1966 [Act 352] under the purview of the Prime Minister's Department. Its main function then is to implement family planning programs in Malaysia.

The Population and Family Development Act 1966 [Act 352] was formerly known as the Family Planning Act 1966. It was revised twice, once in 1976 and again in 1984. The Act was renamed during the second revision. Consequently, the National Family Planning Board (NFPB) was renamed National Population and Family Development Board Malaysia (NPFDB) (Malay: Lembaga Penduduk dan Pembangunan Keluarga Negara (LPPKN)). The function of the Ministry was widened to include population and socio-economic development.

In June 2001, the National Family Planning Board (NFPB) was placed under the purview of the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development (KPWKM).

The main function of Lembaga Penduduk dan Pembangunan Keluarga Negara (LPPKN) is to plan, implement, coordinate and advise the government on matters relating to policies, programs and activities on population, family development (marriage and parenting counseling) and human reproduction.
