Initially established in 1975 as the National Advisory Council on the Integration of Women in Development (NACIWID) under the purview of the Prime Minister's Department. It was responsible for the development of women in Malaysia.
In 1983, the Department of Women Affairs (Malay: Jabatan Hal Ehwal Wanita (HAWA)) was established to take over the tasks of the NACIWID.
On August 26, 1985, Jabatan Hal Ehwal Wanita (HAWA) was upgraded to a division known as the Division of Women's Affairs. The Division was again upgraded to a department on January 29, 1997 and known as the Department for Women's Affairs.
On July 1, 2001, the Department was restructured and renamed the Jabatan Pembangunan Wanita (JPW). It was placed under the purview of the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development (KPWKM) as the implementing machinery to carry out programs and activities for women development.
The Department now comprises of 5 divisions:

Coordination, Monitoring and Evaluation
Guidance and Counselling
The main objective of Jabatan Pembangunan Wanita (JPW) is to enhance the potential of women to contribute more substantially to the country's development through the provision of support services and capacity building programs.
