Jabatan Laut Sarawak (JLS)
Also known as the Sarawak Marine Department in English term. JLS has existed since the Brooke's family rule in Sarawak. It was then known as The Shipping Office. In 1922, a new order was issued where The Shipping Office cooperated with The Trade and Customs Department of Sarawak, known as The Marine Department of Sarawak but seldom used, in the handling of trades done by sea routes. After the end of The Second World War, The Marine Department of Sarawak name was officially used. In 1963, Malaysia was formed and The Marine Department of Sarawak was finally renamed Jabatan Laut Sarawak (JLS) and placed under the purview of the Ministry of Transport, Malaysia. JLS's objective is to ensure shipping and navigational safety and conservation of sea in an effective and efficient manner towards the realization of an excellent and renowned maritime industrial growth. The JLS official website features services (safety navigation, industrial control, hydrographic services) and lighthouses.
