Prior to the establishment of Jabatan Laut Malaysia, there were three (3) separate marine departments in Malaysia, namely:
Marine Department of Peninsular Malaysia (Malay: Jabatan Laut Semenanjung Malaysia),
Marine Department of Sabah (Malay: Jabatan Laut Sabah), and
Marine Department of Sarawak (Malay: Jabatan Laut Sarawak).
On January 1, 2011, all three of the marine departments were merged to form the Marine Department Malaysia (Malay: Jabatan Laut Malaysia).
