Department of Civil Aviation (DCA) was initially established in Singapore in 1947. It was responsible for air services provided in the Federation of Malaya and Borneo. In 1948, it was placed under the purview of the Ministry of Lands, Mines and Communications.

Department of Civil Aviation (DCA) for Federation of Malaya was later formed in Kuala Lumpur in 1953 under the purview of the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications to provide domestic services.
It became a self-accounting department under the Ministry of Transport in 1976.
Department of Civil Aviation (DCA), Malaysia (Malay: Jabatan Penerbangan Awam, Malaysia) was established when the Civil Aviation Act 1969 [Act 3] was promulgated in 1969.
Its main objective was to administer the country's aviation safety and regulatory programs and to provide systematic air traffic control services to air aircraft in its airspace.
Activities regulated by the Department of Civil Aviation (DCA) include aircraft certification, registration, personnel certification, airport licensing, air operators certification, air traffic control and air navigation equipment certification.

In 1992, Department of Civil Aviation (DCA) was separated into two (2) entities namely Department of Civil Aviation (DCA) and a corporatised Malaysia Airport Berhad (MAB). DCA remains as the regulatory authority for technical, safety and operational standards of civil aviation in Malaysia while MAB focuses on the operation, management and maintenance of airports in Malaysia.
Department of Civil Aviation (DCA) head office was relocated from Wisma Semantan, Jalan Gelenggang to Putrajaya in May 2001.
On February 19, 2018, Department of Civil Aviation (DCA) was transformed into an independent regulatory and statutory body known as Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM) (Malay: Pihak Berkuasa Penerbangan Awam Malaysia) under the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia Act 2017 [Act 788].
