Jabatan Ukur dan Pemetaan Malaysia is one of the oldest government agencies in Malaysia. The first state Department of Survey (Malay: Jabatan Ukur) was established in Johor in 1885.
Other states followed suit in establishing their own Department of Survey and Topography until 1957 when the state departments were gradually consolidated and placed under a federal government department, what we today call Jabatan Ukur dan Pemetaan Malaysia (JUPEM).
In 1965, the Malaysia Government formed the Malaysia Directorate of National Mapping which was given the mandate to coordinate mapping and spatial data activities in the country.
Jabatan Ukur dan Pemetaan Malaysia (JUPEM) is responsible for carrying out topographical and geodetic surveys of Malaysia. It provides advice and assistance to the government on surveying and mapping matters while conducting its main activities of cadastral surveying and mapping surveying. JUPEM also provides topographic maps, spatial databases and geographical information for essential services such as military operations, commercial applications and civil use.
Since the establishment of JUPEM, the department has embarked on various modernisation programmes of both its operations and field to keep abreast with the advancements in its field.
