Jabatan Pembangunan Kemahiran (JPK)

Jabatan Pembangunan Kemahiran, abbreviated JPK, is also known as the Department of Skills Development in English.

It is an agency under the purview of the Ministry of Human Resources (Malay: Kementerian Sumber Manusia).

Jabatan Pembangunan Kemahiran (JPK) was established in May 1989 as Majlis Latihan Vokasional Kebangsaan (English: National Vocational Training Council).

On September 1, 2006, Majlis Latihan Vokasional Kebangsaan was renamed Jabatan Pembangunan Kemahiran (JPK), when the National Skills Development 2006 [Act 652] (Malay: Akta Pembangunan Kemahiran Kebangsaan 2006) was gazetted for the purpose of promoting, through skills training, the development and improvement of a person's abilities for vocation.

Jabatan Pembangunan Kemahiran (JPK) is responsible for the formulation, promotion and coordination of vocational and skills training strategies and programmes in Malaysia in keeping with the country's technological and economic development needs.

Main functions of Jabatan Pembangunan Kemahiran (JPK) are:
  • to access skills training needs;

  • to implement the Malaysian Skills Certification System (Malay: Sistem Persijilan Kemahiran Malaysia);

  • to promote skills training programmes;

  • to assist and enhance the skills capacity of individuals;

  • to conduct research and development in skills training related areas;

  • to develop and review standards for the purposes of the National Occupational Skills Standards (Malay: Standard Kemahiran Pekerjaan Kebangsaan (SKPK)).
