Malaysian Examinations Syndicate (MES)

Also known as the Lembaga Peperiksaan Malaysia (LPM) in Malay term. Established on May 3, 1956 as the Examination Unit under the Ministry of Education. It was renamed Malaysian Examinations Syndicate (MES) the following year, 1957. MES is responsible for planning, setting examination questions, conducting examinations at national levels; and handling 4 national examinations (Ujian Pencapaian Sekolah Rendah-UPSR, Penilaian Menengah Rendah-PMR, Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia-SPM and Sijil Tinggi Agama Malaysia-STAM) and several professional and overseas examinations (University of London, C&G, ICSA, ACCA, ABSRSM, ISBA etc.). The primary school examination UPSR (Primary School Assessment) was introduced in 1988 replacing the PDL (Standard Five Assessment). The secondary school SPM (Form 5) was introduced in 1964 while PMR (Form 3) was introduced in 1993 replacing the Sijil Rendah Pelajaran (SRP).
