Credit Bureau of Bank Negara Malaysia was established under section 30 of the Central Bank of Malaysia Act 1958 [Act 519], which was repealed and replaced by section 47 of the Central Bank of Malaysia Act 2009 [Act 701].

Credit Bureau of Bank Negara Malaysia has been in operation since 1982. It is the first credit bureau in Malaysia and also a public credit bureau.
The main function of the Credit Bureau is to collect credit information, including bounced cheque due to insufficient funds, on customers of financial institutions and furnishes the credit information collected back to the institutions in the form of credit report to facilitate financial institutions to make assessments on credit applications. Therefore, the info in the credit report could assists them to make informed decisions on credit applications.
Credit information collected by the Credit Bureau is also disclosed to registered credit reporting agencies. Credit report can also be obtained by the person who is the owner of the information, through eCCRIS (an online platform) or from Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM).
Central Credit Reference Information System (CCRIS) is an online system of the Credit Bureau created in 2001 to collect and disseminate credit information more efficiently.
