Blender Review

" A professional 3D computer graphics tool for creating animated films, visual effects, 3D printed modules, interactive 3D applications and video games. "

Blender is a professional free and open-source 3D computer graphics software product aimed at media professionals and artists for creating animated films, visual effects, art, 3D printed models, interactive 3D applications and video games.

It is a fully integrated creation suite that offers a wide range of essential tools for the creation of 3D content.

Blender is one of the most popular Open Source 3D graphics software in the world. It provides cross-platform interoperability, extensibility, a small footprint and a tightly integrated workflow.

Key Features:
  • Sculpting:

Built-in sculpting features includes 20 different brush types, multi-res sculpting support, dynamic topology and mirrored sculpting.
  • Integrated game engine:

Create fully featured 3D game. Includes full Bullet Physics integration, create game logic, port models to 3rd party game engine, playback of games, support for all OpenGL dynamic lighting, toon shading, animated materials and normal and parallax mapping.
  • 3D modeling:

Create, transform and edit models with modeling tools such as keyboard shortcuts for fast workflow, N-Gon support, edge slide, collapse and dissolve, grid and bridge fill and Python scripting for custom tools and add-ons.
  • Animation toolset:

Create impressive animations with features such as automated walk-cycles along paths, character animation pose editor, Non Linear Animation (NLA) for independent movements, IK forward/inverse kinematics for fast poses and sound synchronization.
  • Camera and object tracking:

Import raw footage, track footage, mask areas and see camera movements live in 3D scene. Includes auto and manual tracking, powerful camera reconstruction and support for Planar tracking and Tripod solvers.
  • Rendering:

Ultra-realistic rendering with rendering engine, Cycles. The engine offers multiple views, GPU and CPU rendering, realtime viewport preview, HDR lighting support, permissive license for linking with external software.
  • UV unwrapping:

Unwrap mesh and use image textures or paint directly onto the model. Fast cube, cylinder, sphere and camera projections. UV layout image exporting, multiple UV layers, conformal and angle based unwrapping.
  • Realistic materials:

Complete node support for full customization, physically accurate shaders like glass, translucency and SSS, Open Shading Language (OSL) support for coding unique shaders.
  • Rigging and skinning:

Transform a model into a posable character with rigging tools such as envelope, skeleton and automatic skinning, easy weight painting, mirror functionality, bone layers and colored groups for organization and B-spline interpolated bones.
  • Built-in video editor:

Basic actions include cut, splicing, video masking, audio mixing, syncing, scrubbing, speed control, keyframes and live preview.
  • Simulations:

Simulation tools include fluid, smoke, particle, soft body, hair, cloth, rigid body physics simulations.
  • Built-in full fledged compositor:

Impressive library of nodes for creating camera fx, color grading, vignettes. Render-layer support, full compositing with images and video files, ability to render to multiLayer OpenEXR files, multi-threaded.

Other features include:
  • small executable size and footprint
  • real-time visualization of stereoscopic effect
  • camera stereo settings
  • texturing
  • raster graphics editing
  • post-production
  • match moving
  • scripting

Blender comes with a wide range of extensions that can be easily turned on or off. These extensions can be categorized into:
  • 3D View that extend the 3D view
  • Curve tools to create curves
  • Add Mesh to create geometry or 3D objects
  • Animation tools and create Ipo's
  • Import and export formats (e.g. AfterEffects, Unreal Game Engine, DirectX)
  • Game engine
  • Developing new tools
  • Edit mesh and mesh tools
  • Compositing
  • Materials
  • Generic node tools
  • Object helpers and tools
  • Texture, weight and vertex painting
  • Scene rendering
  • Rigging tools to work on Armatures
  • Text editor and tools
  • Customized interface themes
  • Sequencers editing
  • System wide useful tools
  • UV editing

Blender has a user community support forum for questions, answers and critique.

Note

Internet access is not required for normal operation. However, in order to access the User Manual and other online resources, you'll need an Internet connection.

Note for Windows XP:

If error occurs during Blender startup, please install the Visual C++ 2013 Redistributable Package.
