The law of Canada is based on the English common law system but the Quebec province retains a civil system for issues of private law. Both legal systems are subject to its supreme law, the Constitution of Canada.
The Supreme Court of Canada is the highest court in Canada. A legal professional who is licensed to practise law in Canada must be admitted to the bar to one of the mandatory provincial or territorial law societies. The Federation of Law Societies of Canada is the national coordinating body of all law societies mandated by provincial and territorial law to regulate lawyers in Canada, notaries in Quebec and independent paralegals in Ontario. |
