A Commissioner for Oaths is a person authorised to administer oaths and take and receive affidavits, declarations and affirmations.

A deponent or declarant is the person who makes an affirmation or makes a declaration under oath.

A Commissioner for Oaths cannot certify or verify documents but only certifies that the oath, affirmation or declaration has been properly administered. Neither does a Commissioner for Oaths certify that the statements contained in a document are true.
