Meeting with compulsory attendance

Hope someone can shed some light for me in the following problem that I'm facing.

My company's director sent out a meeting notice with compulsory attendance. I've responded asking for agenda of the meeting and explained that meeting outside working hours is impossible for me as due to personal reason, and request to reschedule the meeting to another possible date/time. She replied by insisting that the meeting to be held at the said date, and asking me not to waste anymore of my time in sending more emails to her.

My question are as belows:
1. Does she has the rights or is it lawful to make me attend to the said meeting outside of working hours?
2. When reason of not able to attend the meeting has been given, do I have the rights to not attend the meeting?
3. When meeting is mentioned "Compulsory attendance", does that mean we as an employee must turn up no matter what?

Hi there

1. Does the Company always have meeting outside working hours? If yes, and if you have attended them before, you can write to the Company to state that this time you have a personal reason and you can't attend the meeting. However, if the Company insist you attend, the prudent thing to do is to attend the meeting. On the other hand if meeting outside the working hours is rare, then my advice would be you should attend the meeting.

2. In the event you don't attend the meeting despite being told to do so, you are committing an act of insubordination and the Company could possibly dismiss you for that.

Thanks for the prompt reply, however I still have further questions on this:

Does that means that even if I have valid reason for not able to attend the said meeting, I'm still having the chance of committing act of insubordination?

You can write to the Company stating your reasons but if the Company insist, then the safest thing for you to do is to attend the meeting.
