I booked a flight home on the 1st of January 2020 and then I found out after the fact that my work visa expires on the 30th of December 2019 (No excuses, I am an idiot).

So at the time of writing this, I have more or less a week to sort this out, what would be the best option for my case? Aside from changing my flight date which would cost some fortune.

Thank you in advance.

@bob21897

what would be the best option for my case?
1. Change your flight plans.

2. Go immediately to any Immigration Office and apply for an extension of another 7 days. They may charge you RM 100 for a special pass (extension).

Reasons for extension:
1. No available flights during this festive season.
2. You would like to spend the New Year in Malaysia with your ex-colleagues.

Please check if there are other issues as you have mentioned "expiry of work visa".

3. Have you gotten a C.O.M. stamp in your passport for the completion of the work permit? Your legal employer have to COM you out legally.

4. The air-tickets prices are sky high these few weeks because too many illegal immigrants are leaving by end of December coupled with the fact, competing with tourist going home.
