Immigration is correct.

Visa is valid for 30 days NOT 31 days.

Be careful when travelling to Thailand

Although it is stamped 30 days visa the officer may write the expiry date on it sometimes 28 days (4 weeks). Many travelers were caught this way.

Personally I feel that for normally 1 day overstay, the ban of 5 years is too harsh.

Did she argue with the immigration officers or accidentally throw a shoe at them out of frustration?

Appeal against the long ban with valid reasons at the Malaysian Embassy in her country.

I have witness an incident at KLIA2 on 23rd July where a middle east family was shouting at screaming at immigration officers causing Airport Police running from all directions. Apparently he was denied entry after spending 3 fully days outside immigration check point.
