Yes, e-cigarettes are dangerously unregulated and here is the proof straight from the website of the FDA:
"Only e-cigarettes that are marketed for therapeutic purposes are currently regulated by the FDA Center for Drug Evaluation and Research (CDER). Currently, the FDA Center for Tobacco Products (CTP) regulates:
- Cigarette tobacco
- Roll-your-own tobacco, and
- Smokeless tobacco.
FDA has issued a proposed rule that would extend the agency's tobacco authority to cover additional products that meet the legal definition of a tobacco product, such as e-cigarettes."
Currently e-cigarette is not approved as a medical device or a device that assists in quitting smoking, so e-cigarettes are less controlled than a detergent or drain cleaner.
If you are considering switching to e-cigarette or use e-cigarette as a tool to quit smoking - here is what FDA has to say about the safety of vaping:
"E-cigarettes have not been fully studied, so consumers currently don't know:
- the potential risks of e-cigarettes when used as intended,
- how much nicotine or other potentially harmful chemicals are being inhaled during use, or
- whether there are any benefits associated with using these products.
Additionally, it is not known whether e-cigarettes may lead young people to try other tobacco products, including conventional cigarettes, which are known to cause disease and lead to premature death."
Largest e-cigarette manufacturers are controlled by tobacco companies. They have been watching reduction of rate of smoking for decades and e-cigarette is their last resort.
When vaporizers first appeared they were advertised as completely healthy thing. It was presented even as an alternative to quitting smoking.
You want to quit smoking? Why would you do that? Just smoke this magic device and you will be able to be healthy without the need to eliminate nicotine from your life.
Even if e-cigarette gave you only nicotine that would be enough to raise a red flag. Nicotine is poisonous and addictive chemical. But don't you worry about it - it is not sad and lonely. In addition to nicotine you inhale all sorts of chemicals.
The problem is that due to lack of regulation every vaping liquid gives wildly different results for its ingredients. Some show amounts of cancer causing chemicals ten times the level of cigarettes, others fair a bit better.
Finally, for the possible results of this "healthy habit" I would like to return to FDA:
"We regularly receive voluntary reports of adverse events involving e-cigarettes from consumers, health professionals and concerned members of the public. The adverse events described in these reports have included hospitalization for illnesses such as:
- congestive heart failure,
- hypotension, and
- other health problems."
E-cigarette is not a healthy product contrary to what we are led to believe. The only real way to improve your health is to quit smoking.
Only by eliminating nicotine addiction from your like you will be able to enjoy true freedom from addiction. You will actually feel and see how your health is improving.
