JARING introduced the internet to the Malaysian community in 1992. In June 1997, JARING became the first ISP in South East Asia to install T3 line, which gives JARING subscribers faster access to the internet. In 1999, JARING launched SuperJARING, an internet backbone infrastructure which travels at the speed of 2.5 Gigabits per second transmission, making it the fastest and longest IP-over-fibre backbone service available in the world at that time. JARING was later established as a spin-off company under MIMOS Berhad on April 1, 2005. In December 2006, the Ministry of Finance officially takes over JARING from MIMOS Berhad. Products and services offered by JARING include Broadband Flite, Dedicated Access, Dial Up, Global Roaming, Office Broadband, OneComm Prepaid, Home Computer Security, QuikSurfer, Secure Internet Data Center, Secure VPN, Secure Solution, Web Hosting and Safe Guided Internet. The JARING official website also features Self Care (Manage Account Online) and Webmail.

Commenced operations on January 1, 1985 as the Malaysian Institute of Microelectronic Systems (MIMOS), a unit under the Prime Minister's Department. In 1990, MIMOS was placed the MOSTE, now known as (MOSTI) Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovations. In 1992, MIMOS launched Malaysia's first Internet Service Provider (ISP), JARING. In November 1996, MIMOS was corporatised as a company under the Ministry of Finance. MIMOS is a Research and Development (R&D) organisation specialising in the areas of ICT and microelectronics. It focuses on applied research areas - cyberspace security, encription systems, grid computing, communication technologies, microenergy, microsystems (MEMS/NEMS), advanced informatics & knowledge technology. Projects developed by MIMOS includes iVEST (Virtual Environment for Secure Transactions), MyCfL (Malaysia's first Cryptography protocol), NISER (National ICT Security and Emergency Response Centre) and Cikgu.net (Portal for educators).
